It's hard to give an average because a lot of it depends on how the car's driven and maintained, and most cars have more than one owner during their lifetime so it's difficult (if not impossible) to control for those factors. Any car can theoretically last forever if you're willing to continuously replace parts as they fail, but the general consensus seems to be that modern cars should be able to last at least 200k miles with proper maintenance.
If you're buying new or nearly new it likely won't even matter, most people get tired of their car and trade it in long before it reaches the end of its life.
BTW, GM cars generally have better reliability than Chrysler/Dodge cars, according to Consumer Reports.

I feel the same way. But think about this: I have a 1992 toyota corolla that has many miles on it. It's 15 years old and still sounds like the day it was bought. I also had a 1994 corolla that hit 200,000 miles in 2005 and ran beautifully.
american cars are great, but don't usually last more than 8 to 10 years. Just depends on your long term financial goals.

It depends on the type of car and the type of motor. Usually V8's last longer than V6's and V6's last longer than 4 cylinders. However gas is more expensive obviously for a big V8 than a 4 cylinder car. Once you get over a 100k miles, I would want a v6 at least but it still depends on how the car was cared for by the previous owners too. Just make sure you get the car thoughly checked out before you buy it.

You get what you pay for. A cheap car like a Chevy Cavalier that is not maintained properly will probably crap out in nine years. Buy something pricier and of better quality and you will get double that life, especially if maintenance schedules are followed. Be aware that federal laws require manufacturers of cars sold in the USA are required to supply parts only 14 years after the year they were sold new, so it's possible to suffer a parts shortage on an otherwise quality product. My advice: buy a Honda or Toyota. They seldom disappoint.

Hard to know the life span of a car just made :)
If you're looking for an upper limit, it's pretty useless. It's probably a few standard deviations away from average. Saying that people can weigh up to 1200 lbs doesn't indicate what most people weigh, for example...

It is hit and miss. If you get a car that was built during a union turmoil, or a car that was built on Friday or Monday (Hang-over, Party-time), you most likely will get a lemon. Get one that is built (assembled) Spring/Fall (Long time workers not on Holidays thus not built by non seasoned workers) and as close to Wednesday as possible. Demand this info from your new car dealer. Assembly date IS available (Bring your calender to check exact day of week). Ask to see it and confirm with the VIN # on the vehicle.

last 3 cars I had went around 150,000 miles each before I decided the routine maintaince was going to cost me more then the value of the car. I expect the engines where good for 200 to 250,000 miles as they had not problem.Generally I keep them around 8 to 10 years.

cars last for different times. Classic cars that have been around since the 50's are still running but the newer cars die out faster. Older cars are better and look better.
