Hi, im thinking about two career fields as i re-enter the civilian world in two weeks. One of which is a career in Law Enforcement. However, im afraid i will be turned away. When i got back from Iraq i was told i had PTSD and since i was over there i have problems sleeping. I only take one prescription for the sleeping issue, and non of this affects my work ethic, or my attendance ever. I really dont know which career i should pursue. I want to be a police officer always did, but im a good mechanic its what i did in the Army and i know it pays better and i dont have to put my life on the line. What to do?

As long as you can pass a background investigation you should be able to become a police officer. Typically, any type of past criminal convictions or other types of moral turpitude can disqualify you.

However, as for PTSD, that will be up to the department you are applying to. Last year I applied to the Santa Fe PD and one of the other candidated was a veteran if the Iraq war and had PTSD and wasn't hired. As I said, different departments have different standards.

As for what you should do, if you really want to be a police officer then do it. Yes a mechanic will pay more, (much more), but do what will make you happy.

To be honest it might effect you in the process, but you have to look a the tong term picture. Since you got PTSD in the being an officer just migh add to it. Two things I would do if I were you is either work for a small city police officer, or deputy that works mostly in the court house. You could also try being an intsructor in the academy after a few years in the on the force, and train new officers.

It's up to you, good luck

If you want to try to get into law enforcement, go for it. They will give you a Psych test prior to hiring you; if the PTSD diagnosis blows it (it very well might not) then you have a fallback position.

Try some ride alongs; it will give you a better idea what your day would be like.
