A 20 year old Wisconsin Deputy, lost his mind today, and shot some teenage kids in a small town of that state where he grew up............One of the teens actually ended up dying.
My question was did this deputy use his service weapon? If so that department should merge, or close down because we all know their getting sued by everyone in that resturant.
What are your thoughts

So you mean to tell me if his police department "GAVE" him the gun, as an issue service weapon the department is now responsible. If it wasn't for the police department he wouldn't have been in position to shoot anyone. His deparment needs to be shut down. Hiring a 20 year old kid to be a "POLICE" was stupid. who ever hired him needs to be fired.

NBC news gave it about 5 seconds in the middle of their news tonight. Any other mass murder would have been their lead for at least a week.

Ugly situation. Seven dead, including the shooter. The Deputy was also a part time police officer for the town. My question is why he was hired in the first place. Twenty is just too young; he was not much older then the victims he shot.
Federal gun laws to not allow for anyone under the age of 21 to own a handgun.
I suspect that some questionable hiring practices resulted in a mentally unfit man being hired.
The lawsuits will be a real hardship on both the county and the town.
Sad, sad event.

1: It wasn't in a restaurant it happened in a home.
2: He KILLED 6 young people the youngest I read about was 14, the kids were watching movies and eating pizza.
3: The news reports have said he used a rifle although I'm not 100% sure that is correct.
4: One of the victims was apparently his ex-girlfriend.
5: News reports say that he fled to another town and took hostages before he was killed by other cops.
20 yrs old is too young to be a cop, he shouldn't have been in a position of authority with so little life experience.
And it goes to show that you can't always depend upon those who are sworn to protect you; therefore you should protect yourself.

Your analysis of lawsuits is flawed. Whither or not he used his service weapon does not matter. Anyone willing to sue the department over the shooting doesn't CARE what weapon he used. Merging of closing the department would have ZERO effect on any lawsuit as well. City/county for which he works would be sued.

I became a police officer at the age of 20. In NC it is legal if you turn 21 by your first year anniversary as a LEO. Anyway I never went nuts and shot someone.
It's a bad thing but the state is coming in to investigate it.
Here's a link to the news story:

He wasn't working at the time so the Sheriff's Department may be clear of liability. Have to wait and see how things pan out.

Actually 6 of the teens ended up dying, and a 7th is in critical condition. He graduated HS with 3 of them, it was personal and very tragic.
Regardless of using his service weapon, he could have used a rifle and done the same thing.

You said the officer was OFF duty......Whether he used his service weapon or not is not the main point too this tradgedy!!! A man lost his sanity and killed young innocent people. That is the point and the huge horrid tradgedy!! As far as who is geting sued, he was off duty. So that may be a troubled, long court house story. But it will not bring back the lost lives or the broken hearts...............

You can't blame the police department. You going to shut down the military if a soldier goes nuts?

Regardless of whether he used his service pistol, this is another reason that they should mandate psych evals for anyone who is forced to carry a gun for their job. (It's already required for law enforcement personel in most states)
Personally, I say for everyone, but that's never gonna happen.
And, as an added note, the police did not give him the weapon. He actually used a rifle, which is not standard police issue
