I usually don't sleep more than four or five hours a night, it's frequently less than that, and I'm always tired, but not so much. The rare nights that I can sleep six hours or more, I wake up feeling more tired, and stay sleepy all day.

Ideas?

Thank you for your answer! :)

Have a wonderful week ahead! :)

You are probably suffering the effects of long term sleep deprivation. Four hours a night is just not enough and the effects are cumulative.

Sleeping too much is also unhealthy, but I don't think that thats your problem. Its not exactly the same for every person but 7 or 8 hours a night is generally a good guideline. I like to get 8 or 9 hours because I'm an exercise fanatic and I have a stressful job so I need the extra rest.

Sleep is very important for you overall health and so I'm worried about you my friend and I want you to get more sleep.

There are many non-drug solutions. Arrange your schedule so that you set aside at least 7 or 8 hours for sleep. Even if you don't actually sleep for this period you should start by reserving this time. Even if you aren't actually sleeping, just resting in a darkened room in your bed is a good start.

I don't know what your usage of caffeinated beverages is but you should avoid those if you are having sleep difficulties. Also if you are having trouble getting to sleep, try NOT to nap in the middle of the day. A regular schedule is important to getting enough sleep. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

Try NOT to read in bed, watch TV, engage in Y!A, write e-mail or do anything that will excite you or get your brain working. Make sure that your sleep area is for sleep and nothing else. You will be surprised how important this is.

You CAN train your body to sleep better. Like I said this is very important for your health and it has been well studied by health professionals (ie - don't just take my word for it, there is plenty of information out there)

It's because your body is not used to much sleep so it doesn't start getting real sleep until like 6 hours or so then it thinks ok good I can catch up on some sleep and starts going into deeper sleep followed by you waking up to whatever wakes you up and now your body is telling you it wants more of that sleep. In a way. I'm the same way I'll go full weeks each night running on 4 hours the next day then the day I sleep for say 8 hours the whole day I'm tired because I'm trying to make up for all that sleep.
If I were you I'd try sleeping more regularly you don't necessarily have to sleep 8 hours if it truely doesn't fit your schedule but at least 6 or so then whenever your body gets a REAL good nights sleep it will be hyper instead of down. Another thing that may be unrelated try not to drink many energy drinks, coffee or anything like that it makes the body less dependent on natural energy and throws all that stuff out of wack idk if you actually drink that but I've heard drinking less of that stuff makes you more able to sleep better. And have more independently active days

I have exactly the same pattern. I take a sleeping pill, which is fairly mild, but a good night to me is four or five hours. Some nights, I give up and don't sleep at all. As you said, if I do happen to sleep six hours I feel drugged the next day. I have been to a sleep clinic, and they told me that they would work with me until I was getting at least six hours a night. They gave up on me. My doctor did prescribe one sleeping pill that knocked me cold, but only for the four hours I normally sleep. I would have slept through the smoke alarm on that pill. I have a hard of hearing elderly mother and an eight year old in my home. I am afraid to be knocked out to that point. My doctor is very sympathetic, but he has yet to come up with a solution. I hope yours does. My mother sleeps like a child, and she calls me a vampire! She is convinced that I choose this lousy schedule. {{{Moon}}} See you around 3:00am CST! Seems like you are hitting your stride about then. What time is that in Brazil?

It could be depression. However, some people need less sleep than others, and feel more tired with longer sleeps than shorter ones. I always found a short nap, so long as I had a dream, could be wonderfully refreshing between watches at sea, and similar occasions - but eventually needed a long sleep. And ashore I'd sometimes put all the "urgencies" aside, go to bed and sleep for a couple of days, waking only for food, until I was bored, or ready for action. Putting things out of your mind is a trick to learn. And there's nothing so energizing as something to look forward to! But see a doctor. Some people suffer oxygen deprivation when sleeping and it can be exhausting.

Moon, the human body was desigend to sleep for 8 to 10 hours a night. by sleeping only 4 or 5 hours you have thrown off you circadian rythymns and have become chronically sleep deprived. YOur body will adjust to the new slep schedule but it'll take some time for that to happen.

Probably it's the quality of your night sleep. With sleep issue, it's more the quality not the quantity. However 4 - 5 hours sleep is not enough. Try to go to bed early and relax before going to sleep. Dark room is better than bright room. No TV in the bed room. Try some aroma therapy like lavender oil or fresh lavender.. put e few drops on your pillows. Try to do more exercise and eat healthy during the day.. Please don't try any drug. Oh, more more, please clean your bedroom.. really really clean.. :-)

Good night Moon.. Have a good sleep..

Being used to less sleep like that makes it hard for your body to accept getting more sleep. It makes you more lethargic. Depending on your age and physical activity level, you should look into why you're not getting a lot of sleep.

Don't worry too much about why you feel more tired with more sleep. To your body it's just "over-sleep." Your brain thinks it should've woken up much earlier, and just stays in sleep mode longer thinking that you're still supposed to be asleep. If you slept longer on a more regular basis, the effects wouldn't be as bad.

Hon, it sounds like you are sleep deprived. Perhaps you are not getting good sleep. Do you sleep and wake or do you snore, those are all factors that make a long sleep ineffective. Try this, take a Benedryl one night and sleep through at least 8 hours, and see if you don't feel better when you get a good nights sleep.

Do you dream? Have you considered the possibility of sleep apnea? My husband has this and he is always tired, regardless of how much or how little sleep he gets.

During apnea episodes, which can vary in both severity and frequency, a person stops breathing. When this happens, your sleep is disturbed, never allowing you to enter into REM sleep, which our bodies need in order to repair and revive. In the case of my husband, he had so many episodes in a night, his blood oxygen level was dangerously low. Sleep apnea can lead to serious complications, such as sudden cardiac arrest.

Even if it is nothing as serious as sleep apnea, you might consider going to a sleep clinic to find out what exactly is going on. I would refrain from taking sleeping aides.
