She is going to slow her metabolism and her body will begin to burn her own muscle for energy. What she is doing is unhealthy if she keeps it up.

That's nice that you're concerned for your friend's health.

85 pounds sounds awfully light on her feet, even though she's only 5' tall. Even though I work out, I can't remember the average BMI for a person of that height.
Your friend just may have a very high metabolism, especially if she's young.

Does she seem very weight conscious to you? Overly conscious? Do you have a reason to be concerned that she might be leaning towards Anorexia?

Just keep an eye on her overall attitude. If she's really down on herself and complaining that she thinks she's too fat, then I would watch her behavior after she eats. For instance, does she run into the bathroom right away to get rid of the food she just consumed? That's a definate sign.

Also, does she appear to be hungry when she eats, or does she just nibble on her food, and then say she's full. Those are some of the signs to look out for.
Good luck with your friend and good lookin' out!

She could be on her way to anorexia. 1000 calories a day is not enough, even for a petite girl like her. She should have at least 1500 calories daily, and not exercise excessively. What she's doing could lead to an eating disorder which could seriously impair her health. At five feet tall, she should weigh at least 100-105 pounds. She is much too thin.

she really needs to eat more calories if shes only getting 1000 but then burns off 600.. thats only 400 cals.. your supposed to be getting 2500 at the least. shes really skinny and sounds kinda un healthy you should have her see a school nurse or a doctor and ask about some eating tips and get a physical

Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia often control body weight by voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. It primarily affects adolescent females all over the world, however approximately 10% of all afflicted are male. Anorexia nervosa is a complex condition, involving psychological, neurobiological, and sociological components.

im 124 pounds
and 5'3

it dosent really sound like ur friend is taking in enough calories
i eat about 2300 calories a day, but i also swim for two and a half hours a day
it all depends on how much she excersies and what she does,
but i still think she should eat more.......
try protein bars, there filling and have a lot of calories ( but there the good kind of calories that give you energy and protein that you need)

What you are describing is not anorexia. Someone with anorexia would never eat 1000 calories a day. Bulimia is a form of an eating disorder where people can exercise all of their calories away. But what you are talking about is not anorexia. Besides, we here should not be making medical diagnosis. What if one of us was wrong and you followed the advise? Only a doctor can tell you with information that you can rely on.

Try 2000 calories a day - she doesn't eat enough to support her bodies needs. 18.5 is when the weight starts to get normal, any lower and your underweight. She may not be anorexic, but she isn't healthy.

How old is she? That weight is ok if she is like 12 or 13 but I dont think she needs to diet if thats what your saying she is doing.

that is definitely not enough...she is only getting 400 calories a day when she should be getting at least 1200... you need to talk to her about this, pronto.
