The biggest difference between flying with someone else and flying alone is that you are indeed flying alone. I would just take the advice of others here in that definately bring something to keep you entertained, such as an Ipod or whatever form of portible music you have that involves headphones, a book or whatever other kind of portable entertainment you have that can be brought on a flight.
If you have a connecting flight, just make sure you listen up towards the end of the flight when they start announcing gates numbers.
Example: "For those taking flight 346A with services to BWI aiport in Baltimore, take gate C56." Also listen up for what gate your luggage will be coming in. Yeah it's pretty much common sense, it's just something to keep in mind as sometimes flights can change gate numbers at airports.
If you think are lost or will get lost, you can talk to the flight attendants once the plain lands or anyone of the airline employees at the gates. They are trained to help people and will make sure you know where to go. But basically if you've flown with someone else before, flying by yourself is no different once you know how to navigate your way around airports.
Airports have all kind of signs around to point you in the right direction of whevever you want to go.

What kind of advice are you looking for? How far are you traveling?
It's fun. Just do it.
Get a window seat. You can look outside and enjoy the scenery. If you don't like that, then get an aisle seat so you can get to the washroom easily. Request either kind when you check in at the airport.
Make sure you have your passport if you're leaving the country.
Don't bring liquids on the plane with you as they may be confiscated for security reasons.
Pack lightly if possible.
Don't bring anything that may be illegal if you're going to a different country. Things like weapons, drugs, even alcohol and tabacco products.
Bring some snacks in case the airline is skimpy on food.
Bring a headset because some airlines charge you to use one of theirs. Any normal headset, like one for an iPod, will work.
Be prepared to possibly sit beside a noisy kid.
I actually sat beside a mother who changed the diaper of her kid beside me and didn't even throw it away. Some kids like to kick your seat if they're behind you.
Meditation is a good thing to do while sitting in a seat for hours.
Bring something to kill time like a book, music, magazines, homework, etc.
Have fun.

Try to bring a good book, ipod or cd player to help past the time and dont worry flying is pretty safe and have a great time with your family. I fly by myself alot when I go to Las Vegas from New York.

get there early. Eat something before you get to the air port, relax, chew gum...your ears will pop.
Relax and injoy the ride.
