If you have enough miles you can get "free" roundtrip flights to anywhere your airline or partner airline flies to, or upgrade an existing ticket from economy to business class or business class to 1st class. There are restrictions and you do have to pay a small fee as well. You normally cannot use miles to get discounts, only award travel and upgrades.

When you call to make your reservation tell the person you have airmiles. In the United States it is usually 25,000 miles for a roundtrip ticket anywhere in the US.
