Just got a Lab/Chow mixed puppy from a friend her dog had a litter and my new pup is almost 7 weeks old. My mom said I have to get him fixed and shots asap and or I cant keep him. She wants me to make vet appointment for sometime this week but I think he is a bit to young.

I think around 8-10 weeks is a good idea that's not to early and that's when most get the 1st shots.

Although there has been research done where puppies and kittens were spayed or neutered at that early of an age most veterinarians will not perform a surgical procedure at this age. Also anesthesia at this age can be very complicated and perhaps to risky to perform for an elective surgical procedure. The common earliest age is 5 months old. At 7 weeks old the testicles might not be completely descended which can make the surgery more complicated and therefore more expensive. Also there have been some research that shows that testosterone is needed for normal healthy growth and development that is still occurring at this young age. Vaccinations schedule can be started now and a neuter can be scheduled for 5-6 months of age pending that he is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia and surgery at that time.

People do that mainly in high stray areas. Its to prevent from strays mating and causing a larger problem. Its generally not healthy because the sexual organs give off hormones which are crucial to the growing process of the animal to be able to mature properly. However, with that said, animals neutered pr spayed at a young age can still be great pets. And just an FYI, the proper age for a cat or dog to be fixed is 6 months

It's best to get them nuetered at 6 months, but some vets will do it at 8 weeks. You should have waited untill the pup was at least 8 weeks to bring him home. Still needs to be with his mommy and litter mates.

I'd talk to your vet. Your pup will need 3 sets of shots. They usually start when the puppy is 8 weeks old. I'd call your vet and talk to them.

a lot of vets prefer to wait until the dog is 6 months to get neutered but he is due for shots and stool sample for worms.
This should be done about every 3 weeks ( 7,10,11 weeks old) then at 4 months get rabies and then at 5- 6 months get him fixed.

first -start on the shots the vet will give u the schedule. at least 2 weeks between each set of shots. fixing the puppy at 6 months is safe i just got my puppy fixed. & he has recovered very well. do ur homework starting today find out if ur petshops have a vet come in on a monthly basis to give low cost shots vets can get very expensive. in new york u can go to www.muffins.com it cost $52 for a male dog. u may have to visit several petshops to get an answer. talk to other pet owners in ur neighborhood they r very willing to help w/ information. try like petland discounts. petco, petsmarts. grooming also gets very pricey get the phone book out & just call a lot of places ask if they give a discount for first time customers. play w/ his ears paws & tail a lot so this way when u take him to the groomers it won't faze him to be touched there he'll think it's normal & won't try to bit they will charge extra if he is difficult to groom. also go to ur local animal shelter & see if they can fix & give shots to ur puppy at a lesser price
hope this helps

I think three pounds is the rule for getting a dog fixed. It is better to wait until the dog is at least six months. If you can't the dog can be fixed now. Glad to hear your mom in on top of responsible pet ownership!

You should wait until he is 6 mths. His testicles haven't even dropped yet.

Or talk to you vet, but they wont give the first shots until they are 8 weeks.

Shots he needs right away.
Fixed he should be around 4 -6 month.
But ask your vet when you get there to get him shots he can tell you when you should or can neuter him.

my vet usually recommends about 6 months for bigger breed dogs, sometimes a little older for smaller breeds due to their size. you can go ahead and get it its shots but you wont be able to get him fixed yet i don't believe...7 weeks is just really young.
