the thing is though sammy is younger than chase. sammy was never alone he was in a litter of 15 puppies so he has never experienced a life as a single dog. and we always had our cats too. he has never experienced being the only dog in the house

i do push sammy away. i put him in his kennel. i put him outside. i put him in another room. he has had obedience training and he is very obedient but he does not like to share attention. i am the alpha in the pack. both dogs r very submissive to me and respect me but sammy wont share attention. and its not because i dont pay any attention to him. he just hates sharing.

Alpha rolling, hitting your dog with a newspaper, shouting at him, and other forms of bullying punishment will really hurt the relationship that you have with your dog.
The goal with time outs is to be as neutral as possible. If you are 100% certain that the dog that must be time-outed has been shown that the behavior he's doing is not what you want, then the only thing you need to do is whisk him (neutrally, silently) into his time out spot.
Then, when you are ready to take him out, do at least 5 rewardable behaviors with him - easy behaviors such as sits, downs, nose touch to your hand, etc. Always strive to reinforce the bond between you 2, and reward your dog with food or his fave toy for each "trick".
You may wish to look up "NILIF" (Nothing In Life is Free) online. This is a positive program that will help you to have dogs that want to work with you.
Here's why physical punishment doesn't work:

There really isn't such a thing as jealousy in dogs. It's a form of resource guarding. Your dog sees you as a resource... of food, affection, everything really, and he will do anything to guard you from other dogs. Even though he is not showing aggression (yet), you should not put up with this. If you are petting another dog and he comes running up, use a "stop" command, and hold up your hand or point if that helps. You may feel badly for him that he is not getting the attention, but that does not help to solve the problem. If you make him wait until you are done with the other dog, and THEN give him attention, the problem will sort itself out. I brought in an adult male dog to my house to foster until I could find him a home. Every time he and my adult male dog got near me, they would snarl and show teeth at each other. When this happened, I would use the Cesar noise "Tchtttt!" and remove myself from their presence, and eventually (within a couple of weeks), they got the point.

This may be a problem you cannot solve. Some dogs and some cats were just born to be in single pet homes. You might try spending some quality time with each of them away from the other one. Such as put one in a room and shut the door while you play with the other one. At least this way they will both be secure in your love.

Good luck.

If Sammy is being to pushy, put him in a timeout in an xpen or crate and let Chase have some family time. Sammy is basically running your house and you can tell him no or cut it out. If he doesn't, then timeout. Be consistent! Get into an obedience class to help you train him.

correct him when he does it. NO. and make him sit or lay down don't pet him if he gets pushy. when he is calm reward. Reward sam when chase is being petted. with small bites of food for being a good boy and being nice.
if that does not help, ignore him. it sounds mean, its not.

if u pet sam after he runs chase off then u just in forced its ok to be pushy.

good luck

it is dominating behavior. Not horrid dominance. but a claiming type. You be top dog=)
not really a jealous thing...

ohh have sam sit and stay and call chase back if he runs off.

I had the same problem.
I had a Fiest and I was living with my cousin and she had a Akita, evertime I would come to the door from outside, when I went in and greeted both dogs, the Akita would attack my dog,and I would have to pull her off, this happened about every day. 1 day my aunt got a poodle, and the akita almost killed the poodle by putting a HUGE wound on his side, she had to be uthanized.

I just kept pulling her off and tapping her with a newspaper, and putting her in the kennel everytime she did it.

Hope this Helps-Michelle :)

It's you,
you have to be the Alpha Dog.
Grab Sammy's collar,
and say " NO".

Watch " The Dog Whisperer " on TV.
