Tried it for about 15 years.

Members of Catholic religious orders typically take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
Members of women's orders are nuns. A men's religious order may be made up of only priests, only brothers, or a mix of priests and brothers.
Some religious orders are contemplative only -- that is, they spend their lives in prayer and are cloistered, or separated from the outside world.
More likely these days, though, religious orders feature a combination of prayer life, community life, and outside apostolic ministry. They do all sorts of work -- education, hospital work, missionary work, helping the poor and homeless, ministering to the elderly, and so on.
Members of religious orders typically live in the community for a few years under temporary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience -- they take these vows for a year at a time at first. Then, when they're ready and if they wish to do so, they make solemn vows -- they take the same vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but this time it's for life.
