A true hypocrite is one who complains about what is playing on their VCR / DVD player.

As much as I respect Gide, I disagree with this quote. An awareness of the discrepancy is necessary for there to be hypocrisy. A person who, in all sincerity, tells what they believe to be the truth, may be delusional, but not necessarily a hypocrite: they are living the lie that they believe to exist.
A hypocrite lives the lie and doesn't care, in full knowledge of their falsehood.

I agree with the quote. I've known people who have lied so often that they begin to believe their own lies. As for avoiding it in one's own journey, you first have to be honest with yourself and not take things at face value. Do NOT just believe something just because a trusted friend/relative/etc says so - they could very well be in the rut you have described here and their words can't be trusted, no matter how much you love the person. And yes, you can love someone and not trust what they tell you to be true... There is no Black-n-White/Cut-n-Dry in the world. *I wish there were* But if you can't be honest with yourself... and I mean TRULY Honest with yourself, you can easily fall into this dilemma.

Maybe my English understanding is so poor, so to me that description is for a true LIAR for the sake of lying itself.
While Hypocites to me have a hidden "evil" agenda.
They lie for an "evil" purpose.
To avoid it, we hv to live with awarenes.
So we have to seek for knowledge.
If we hear something which we dont agree, whether by ignorance, stubbornness or even real, we have be bravely saying exactly what we think.
We have to be truthfull to ourselves, honest and not afraid of the consequences , we have to live as well as seek for the truth.
We maynot be afraid of other's opinion and willing to accept our weakness/incapability.
We just should not tell any lie or hide things.
Learn from some small things like :
Being late.
We have to keep informing who ever waiting for us, that we'll be late. The earlier we find out that we'll be late the better.
Being wrong.
Say a kid break a glass. She/he has to be trained to report and face the risk of mama gets angry; So children have to be aducated to take responsibility.
( In the other hand, parents should not response wildly as no matter parents scream the glass is broken anyway).
So we have to train ourselves i.e.as parents train children to report and train themselves not be wild.
"Wild" parents make liars kids.
Well I can talk and talk, abt hypocracy I think, what I've written abv giv enough clue to what I mean. I dont know whether you agree or not. It's nice if it's on live discussion.

I'm trying to understand why, for me, the word "Lawyer" springs to mind so readily in contemplation of this question?
Is it a co-incidence that the word "Lawyer" is so closely aligned in sound with the word "liar"? Is it my imagination or is "Barrister" also very closely associated with a Barista?
I think clearly some advocates have mistaken the one vocation for the other, in the high school careers handbook.
Remain true to your passions without disgracing your name or your profession. You can be a hypocrite without being deceptive.. without being a liar, can't you? I'm sure you can.
"A true advocate is the one who ceases to perceive his deception, the one who lies with sincerity" ~ has a certain sound of familiarity to it, I think.

The true hypocrite does not realize that he cannot deceive God even if he deceives himself
If someone is sincere he is no longer a hypocrite just a fool and maybe a more dangerous one.
The hypocrite wants to deceive others and the worst hypocrite makes sure that he does not deceive himself while deceiving others

I believe that a genuine hypocrite usually is not a liar, but is rather(as you have stated)..DECEIVED...and believes wholeheartedly that he IS the embodiment of his beliefs and convictions, but it is quite evident to the "discerning",that this is simply not the case.
How can it be avoided?...The old adage,"Practice what you preach" for starters as well as,by seeking counsel from others who know you and are able to speak into your life. Practice being teachable, and pursue humbleness and you will grow in your outward example of your inward convictions.

dangit. you made me go look for my glasses.
okay.
i think most people are self delusional. for example, i look in the mirror in the morning and see a good looking guy. but, that is the mechanism i use to avoid the truth. hypocritical? yes. but dangerous? no.
one who lies with sincerity. dangit, i want to say w. but some of my fav's did the same thing. like bill when he said he smoked but didn't inhale. tricky dick when he said"i am not a crook"
but the most insidious of hypocrites are those that try to steal your soul. yes, I am speaking of the fundamentalists who know what they say is crud, yet continue to spew their hate-filled message as if it were the word of god.

This sounds like Fred Phelps going on about homosexuals when his own daughter had a child out of wedlock (Fornication is as much of an abomination as homosexuality in the Bible... And bastards are not even supposed to be part of the CONGREGATION for TEN generations -- her illegitimate son is part of the Westboro group)
The only way to avoid it is to be completely HONEST about your own beliefs and NOT JUDGE OTHERS by a standard you are not willing to apply to yourself FIRST......

the best way to avoid believing your own lies is to not lie in the first place.
i actually know someone like that. they have lied so often and so creatively that they have begun to believe their own stories.
it's very sad.
