According to the Department of Labor website the current wage in New York State is $7.15 an hour and raising to $7.25 in 2 years but considering the high cost of living in NYC, is the minimum wage higher?

$7.50 wow!!! I was just looking up the rents on NYC apartments and the average apartment was like between $1600 to over $6,000!!! Like I saw studio apartments for $2,000 or more!!!

The cheapest ones were in the Bronx for just less than $1,000.

You cannot survive in NYC on minimum wage. If you want to live in Manhattan comfortably I suggest making AT LEAST $100,000 a year. The more affordable housing is in queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx. The cheapest housing I know is in Newark, NJ which is a short train ride away from Manhattan. However I would really consider Newark as a last option, as it's a high crime area.

The cost of living in the city is extremely high compared to other parts of the country. I would not suggest moving here without a steady, well paying job- not a minimum wage job.

Yeah New York is very expensive!! I mean just to have a livable place you are looking at 3,000 a month for rent. It would be cheaper to live outside the city and drive in, but then you have the wonderful traffic to deal with and parking, plus the cost of gas. I mean only in New York can a 100,000 dollar bonus be considered a nice pat on the back and good job. It is so expensive, Washington DC is about as bad.

Not really the cost of living is more than likely cheaper in Washington than NYC.

in San Francisco, minimum wage $9.5 and free medical care and free transit if you salary too low. That is one reason so many homeless there.
