not impersonal: meet me for drinks at nine.
impersonal: I think we should break up.
grossly impersonal: I'm leaving you for the neighbor. Have your junk out of my house by the time I get home or else...
most times its okay...just in some cases a phone conversation or a personal conversation would be better.

I think it depends on the person. Different people have different preferred methods of communication. Some people would rather talk on the phone because they can get more information about a person's tone of voice, for example. Some people would rather write a letter or e-mail so they can think carefully about how to compose their thoughts. I recommend that you find a method of communication that works for the person you are choosing to communicate with and use that.

E-mail and text is an efficient method of communication when information is not necessarily time sensitive or confidential. It is also a simple method to communicate information to groups of people at one time. It is not an ideal method of communicating emotional or sensitive information as one's tone and/or body language are not transferred.
I use e-mail for keeping up to date with school, work, scheduling, simple requests, and other basic information. I use the telephone or meet in person for apologies, celebratory news, or anything that may be bad news. I use snail mail for condolences, expressing appreciation, and anytime I want to demonstrate a bit of extra effort to the recipient.

If you've got the time to talk, then yes they are,but if your in work or need to talk to someone that can't speak on their phone during working hrs, doing a sneaky text is the only way.
I usually text to say i'll call someone later when i get home.Texting is a must if your trying to find someone in a club, have you ever tried phoning them.

In fact I prefer email and sms to phone calls. With phone calls you never know if they are free to talk........like maybe they are doing their #2, having sex, eating, driving, sleeping/napping, showering, busy talking with someone at the moment you call. So I really think email and text messaging is so much better.
