Usually it is not government assistance, but state, county or school districts. Usually it is if you teach in an area of need (special education, math, science, low performing schools or in low income areas). The amounts vary, and you usually have to teach for a specific amount of time in order to receive the assistance. Usually the assistance will be in the form of "forgiving" a certain amount of student loans, or in a stippen. However, usually you get more "money" if it is loans that are being paid back and less if it is a grant or stipend. Check into the local school districts that you plan on teaching in.

There are student loan forgiveness programs for teachers if you agree to teach in an underserved area. I will include some readings below to help you. However, if you have consolidated your student loans, it might not be possible to have them forgiven. Good luck!
