You need to let us know where you are going to fish. A small stream, if you are going for smaller fish dont take much. Pole, Line, (usually 4 pound test is good) and the smaller hooks are better, 14 or 16, with a small split-shot for a weight. Bait= turn some rocks over and use the bugs and crawly things.

For a simple fishing trip at a pond you would need.
Rod, Reel, Fishing line, Bait Hooks, Small split shoot weights, Bobbers, and for bait you could use either worms, or crickets.
Small tackle box is/would be optional.
Go down to your near by Walmart and go to the sporting goods section and find the fishing gear they sell a small ready made fishing set, look at the package list, it has everything but the rod/reel, line and bait in it.

Fishing pole (you can cut or make your own), fishing line, tackle box, hooks, swivels, sinker, and bait. You'll need a net if you land a big 'un. You'll also need a means to keep your catch fresh. You can either ice them down in a container, or you can put them on a stringer. Your bait needs will vary depending on the species of fish you are fishing for. Don't forget your fishing license (if you're 16 or over in most states).
Don't forget to bring some drinking water, perhaps some sandwiches,
If you plan on leaving the shore to fish, you'll need a boat or canoe, life jacket, means of locomotion (paddle or motor & fuel for motor).

I love to fish! We go fishing mainly for walleye, and do it central Wisconsin and go on fly-in trips to Canada. Things we use are:
Fishing poles- usually about a 6 1/2 foot medium action pole with open faced reels, with 8 lb test line.
Lures; If you use live bait (minnows or leeches or nightcrawlers) you simply tie a jig on your line. (they are simply a hook imbedded in a lead head on it for weight, usually 1/4 or 1/8 ounce jigs, depending on the fishing conditions (wind, choppiness of water surface, because you need to get your bait down to the fish)
or you can use artificial bates, like rapallas (they look like a minnow with hooks on it) , or soft bates, that come in all kinds of colors and shapes, and many have scents that atract fish.
Also you should have a landing net, so you don't lose the fish when you get it close to shore or your boat.
Good luck on your paper! (if you are near a Cabellas store, Fleet farm, or any sporting goods store, take a look at their fishing section for ideas)

Fish can be caught with nothing but a safety pin and a piece of string. Or even just a gorge, which is a small stick sharpened on both ends, and tied on the string in the middle. But, most of us have hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. As for bait, the most common is earth worms. But most any bug can be used to catch fish. You can even catch fish with your bare hands, but that's nearly an art, and I've never had much luck that way.

All you NEED to go fishing is a cut branch, some strong string, some hooks, and some bait like worms, nightcrawlers, grasshoppers, or crickets. To make it more enjoyable, you'd want a good rod, reel, line, lures (or bait and hooks) and a boat or canoe. Yeah better get that license too.

Depends on what type of fishing your doing, but I would recommend that you take a rod, plenty of line, bombs, floats, rigs, hooks, bait, landing net, a comfy seat, something to drink and some food.
Good luck
