It's a lot more expensive to breed a pure bred because it is an intentional breeding and a lot of precautions are warranted (breed specific health test, brucellosis check, stud fee, litter registration, etc.). In addition, pure breed dogs are more predictable, ie, one will have a good idea what size they will be, what hair length, etc. Thirdly, there is the snob factor - people just feel more important when they get a pure breed. And finally, there is good'ol supply and demand. Certain breeds are in demand, some are rare, and mixed breeds generally have greater supply then demand. In reality, though, mixed breeds make great pets and are available at a bargain price (often free).

Just on that basis, they shouldn't be. A well bred, bred by a breeder that cares what they are doing - knows what they are doing - usually costs more than the $50 mutt. Why, because a good breeder does all the evaluations necessary to insure as much as possible that the pup you get will be a good example, in all respects, of their breed. There are plenty of pure bred dogs being produced by greeders to just make a buck and they aren't worth much more than any back yard bred mix. It is a common misconception that a mixed breed is either healthier or better tempered than a purebred - that isn't so - since it is a mix, likely without knowledgeable evaluation of either health or temperament and more often than not bred by someone that doesn't know or care about either, they can be very poorly tempered and have serios health issues as well. You get what you pay for - cheap is usually worth just that.

A responsible purebred dog breeder puts a lot into there dogs. The price of the female, the price of all the health checks (hips, eyes, heart, elbows, thyroid ect depending on the breed) The price of showing the dog to a championship. Trips to the vet for mom and the puppies. The puppies first shots ect. So the price of the puppies is a way to recuperate some but usually not all of that money.

With mixed breed puppies they are generally accidental and even when they're not health testing isn't generally done and there isn't the cost of showing the dog. Responsible owners will still take mom and puppies to the vet and get the first puppy shots but not many will.

With irresponsible purebred breeders they are just in it for however much money they can get out of the puppies. They see the price the responsible breeders charge and think they can at least get some of that.

Most of the pure breeds of dog are the result of hundreds of years of breeding on the part of dog breeders to get particular characteristics "perfected" in a consistently recognizable dog breed.

While it is true that some breeders of the pure breeds are in for the money, the vast majority actually are trying to perpetuate a particular look, a particular set of behaviours and a particular set of characteristics in an animal that is happy and healthy.

For example, a Saint Bernard is fairly unmistakeable as a breed as is a Samoyed or a Blood Hound or a Schnauzer or a Poodle and so on. Each is disctinctly different from the other.

All this breeding requires care and commitment on the part of the dedicated breeder. It includes an historical record of all the dogs that have led to a particular breeding - included in that historical record keeping are health reports, tests, and so on.

A reputable, responsible breeder also makes sure that other "experts" in the dog world also think that their dogs are worth the effort in using them for breeding, so they open themselves up to critique and feedback.

A good breeder is usually always there for you as a buyer of one their puppies as they see themselves as responsible for bringing that puppy into the world.

Add to that the cost of keeping and testing a good quality dog for breeding purposes and you begin to see that what you are paying for is a quality product to the extent that the breeder can produce a good quality puppy (there are absolutely NO guarantees in breeding dogs anymore than there are guarantees in the production of humans).

It takes thought, commitment, understanding and a touch of madness to be a breeder of pure bred dogs.

Simple economics, supply and demand. Whatever the large amount of the public wants is expensive, the stuff nobody wants is cheap. The status of some breeds pushes the price way up, until a new breed finds more popularity.
P.S. "no such thing as a free dog", is so true, our rescue was $60.00 at the shelter, but I knew he would cost me more to remedy medical problems. Thank heavens he wasn't a money pit, but we easily spent as much for this mutt as we would have on any pure bred from a breeder.

Pure breds usually cost more because the breeders carefully select the male and female to have certain traits that the breed should have, so that the puppies take on those traits too.

Some people just want to say they have a "purebred" too, so just like brand name clothes and such, they cost more because they are more sought after.

Also, sometimes mixed breeds happen by accident, so they are sold for less, as the owners usually need to get rid of them faster.

Because with purebreds, you know what you're getting, size and look wise, should be temperament wiser too. Purebreds are harder to come by than mixed breeds as well, making them more expensive...although these days, some of the 'fancy' mixes go for more than the purebreds!

They don't have papers. They are a mixed breed. People can sell them at a lower price.

Cause pure dogs are kinda faster, entergetic, skinny, bulit, and stronger than the mixed breeds.

Cause you oculd get a lot of money of of a pure breed dog if you breed it.
I have a pur breed Jack Russel Terrier he is worth $500-$700 dollars.
But on the other hand if you have a mix breed their not as *wow* as pur breed.
