No, but of course they are not counting 100 milers on Wednesday night like they did back when Richard Petty was driving. If there was the same number of races per year now as then? Then yes, without a doubt Gordon would pass him.
Lets see, would you rather have the number of wins Petty has or the $$$ Gordon has??? Hmmmmm......

It will never happen. They used to run over 60 races in a year, and Petty has won over 20 races in a single season multiple times. With today's schedule, and competition, nobody will ever have a chance to break Petty's record. It was a different era back then. It's hard to compare. Long live the King!

thats one of several of Petty's records that won't be broken.
200 wins
10 wins in a row
27 wins in a season
these 3 for sure will never be broken with the current nascar rules

Petty earned his wins in the days that NASCAR ran 2 or 3 events a week,so this record will stand.

Never. But it should have an asterick next to it. because in those days, you could pretty much do whatever that you wanted to, and the guy with the most money, always won. At that time, petty, pearson, and yarborough , all had the most money , at that time.In todays racing, i think that petty would struggle , just like his son has. Gordon is the best who has ever done it.

Never! But today Richard Petty or nobody else would ever dream of 200 wins in a career.

If Gordon races into his 50's he might- but I'll bet he's retired within 5 years.
It'll have to be somebody who starts real young, and runs well for a long time.
As great as "3" was, he was getting long in the tooth and would have done well to top David Pearson's 2nd place total of 105.
I'm not even sure Gordon will do that.

Nope, not going to happen....if and when, may it be some body other than Jeff Gordon, he is a great driver, but will never drive long enough to break the all time, the Great king Richard Petty....It so sad Dale Sr died way before his time. Then in his greatness might have reached the King...But no one out there now will ever do it....RIP Dale Sr...

Two hundred wins will stand as a NASCAR record as the season is scheduled, now. But not as famous Dick Senneker of Dorr, Michigan is credited with 1200 wins.

The only one with a slight chance is Jeff Gordon. With parity in NASCAR thanks to NASCAR any one of thirty teams can win every week.
Ghost yellows and inconsistent rules from NASCAR makes it even harder. They will NEVER allow a driver to lap the entire field like it has happened in the past.
