bait, and tackle (like hooks, weights)
You can get by on the simplest of set ups though.
let me share a child hood experience: I was required to walk the perimeter fence on our farm and make needed repairs, every week. I would take a sack full of nails, hammer, and wire (general stuff) after several weeks of this, and passing a couple nice ponds on the route, I came up with a great idea.
I took a length of fishing line and a couple hooks with me on the route. I tied the line to a good stick, and used a nail for weight, another smaller stick acted as a bobber, for bait I just flipped over rocks, using whatever I found, a worm, a cricket, anything.
Now it started taking me a lot longer to do this chore, my dad asked if the fence was all right? Of course I had to say it was! I don't think he ever found out either.

A hook and something on it. Keep it simple. I can tear it up with just a stick, line, and hook as long as I have access to the shoreline. Whatever's crawling around the bank works fine on the end of my line.
Edit: leeches and chicken livers for catfish, buzzbaits and shiners for largemouth, Berkley Powerbait (glitter yellow) and Mepps #1's for trout, Roostertails for smallmouth, and Mepps #3 Aglia's or chubs for northerns. Get back with me for other species...email me if necessary.
P.S.-Patience don't cut it; keep moving around the bank.
