I have a very busy job and would love the time to exercise during the day but I don't, and the thought of getting on a hard floor to do sit-ups puts me off! I'm something of an insomniac and am most alert at night, and when I'm lying in bed it's the perfect time to exercise for me... but is it ok to do so on a mattress? I've never heard anything regarding this before, but I know the norm is a hard floor...
And I'm not talking sex, I mean sit-ups, leg raises etc... is there any harm involved, i.e. to my back or anything?

Unfortunately, doing those exercises on a matress doesn't have the same impact as doing them on a mat or the ground (unless you have a ridiculously hard matress). It is difficult to control the moves, and it is just not very effective. I would advise getting a gymnastics mat because it is more useful than the matress but more comfortable than the floor. Also, you should fix your sleep problem because staying in shape requires a good amount of sleep. :D

Sarah that answer is too simplistic. I don't know where you are but house prices and therefore mortgages are crippling in the UK and getting a lower paid job is often not an option.
As for the exercises, just be careful of your back. That's the reason they're done on a hard floor, to keep your back straight and to make sure the right muscles are doing the work. If you don't have much time but you want to do tum exercises try this. When you are standing just lean back slightly, enough to make your tummy "catch". No-one sees you doing this and you can repeat it as often as you like. Worked for me. Also try sucking your tummy in for 10 seconds then releasing. Same thing.
For your bum, tighten your buttocks when sitting and hold for ten. Repeat as often as you like and for legs, again when you're sitting, raise your feet off the floor just a couple of inches and gently bounce them without letting your feet touch the floor. You'll be surprised how much you'll feel the effects of these simple exercises.

You'll do more harm to your mattress; seriously, a bad mattress will cause you more health problems in the long term. Don't abuse your mattress - just sleep on it!

i think you'll be okay exercising on your bed. Be careful not to fall off.
