That's okay if you live in the city......but, you have no idea what some of us would have to go through if we gave up our transportation.....and where would I put the kids ??? I would do it anyway, if everybody else would ! I'd figure something out. Me and my kids would end up Olympic cross-country bicyclers !

The idea of not having a car is far from being a luxury item for many people. People who live in cities have many options. There is public transportation, stores are usually nearby as are schools, everything is close so walking or bicycles is a good alternative.
People who live in rural areas do not have these alternatives. If I walked to the grocery store, it would take nearly a half day to complete the trip. I would probably only be able to carry a couple of days worth of food each time I went. Walking to work would take 5-6 hours each way. Add working a 10 hour day and there isn't much time left in the day. Not very realistic.
I like the idea though. I have tried to conserve by riding my motorcycle every day (regardless of the weather). Sorry, best I can do.

I know I have cut back on the number of car trips to the food store by combining those trips with other reasons for using the car, ie going to the vet or the pharmacy for medicine. I have cut my consumption of gasoline and will continue my efforts to do so even if gasoline costs fall (which is not likely). If I lived in Boston or NY, I would not need a car because the subway system is so convenient, but I live in a city that is hard to get around by bus, bike and walking. I think cars are a luxury. The car-and-carbon-fuels culture we have been brainwashed into relying on must change into something more efficient and less harmful to the biosphere if we are to stop global warming trends and its adverse consequences for many life forms and their habitats.
I join with with you because you care for others and the planet and because you make sense, recognizing the impact that your individual behaviors have on the environment. I can't control what others do. Paraphrasing what the great Mahatma Ghandi said, I can only be the change I want to see in others. The Chinese are very smart people and they don't have the US's bad habits of overconsuming and wasting fuel and food--not Yet!.

We live rurally, we are fortunate there is a nearby train station, although it only stops about 4 times a day, but this is usually used. The kids love it because it gives them freedom and independence. It is a good cycle ride anywhere from here. The kids get school bus to and from the door to school because we live rurally.
I only use the car once a week, to do a round trip, set off really early go car booting, (like a flea market) where I meet family and friends, I shop at the market attached and collect other shopping from the farmers' market and supermarket on the way back. I meet up with other friends for tea in the local town center coffee shop, go to the DIY or builders, get whatever we need then call in at another friend's to see her baby on the last leg home. So I do at most 26 miles a week in the car. The nearest place I can go to is the nearest town that is about 9 miles away so it would be an 18 mile round trip for one trip in.
The car is not a luxury to us. We would be totally cut off when the train didnt run. We need the car for emergencies, my husband works away for part of the week, we live three generationally in the house, children and grandmother. We need it for carrying heavy items, it is still a good walk to and from the train station and for getting places that are not possible by public transport because we are rural. But good on you for walking and biking. Well done.

Well if you do be careful . I live in the city i bicycle allot . people in cars just seem to either try to run you over or there just plane old ignorant . If I'm walking people will stop and let me go threw the intersection but if I'm on my bike it seems like they either speed up or don't see me all though there staring at me dead in the face as there making there turn all though i have the green light they cut in front of me making that left turn yelling at me to stop. I think next time ill do the stunt man thing and ram into them fly over the hood hoping i don't break my neck and collect a bunch of money from there insurance lol. I'm sure they don't do it purposely they just don't know how to react with a person on a bike.

international warming is the effect of pollutants and allied environmental issues. this is not any longer the guy who would desire to combat against international warming, however the full society (international) would desire to combat for 'conservation', incredibly than intake. as a remember of actuality international warming no longer in uncomplicated terms restricted to climatic alterations, even though it is likewise changing the international map. For eg. Antarctica is changing its shape day-via-day with the aid of alterations in temperature and international warming performs an important place. So all and sundry would desire to unite and bring about conservation of organic factors and advance greater trees. additionally utilization of bio-gas and different risky gases would desire to be decreased to guard air and water.

I already did as my New Years Resolution. I rent a car only when I absolutely need one, usually if I am working out of town or for doing a collection of errands all at once. I am saving about $10,000 per year on car depreciation, gas, insurance, etc.
I am going to look into one of those auto time share deals, they say they are as low as $6 per hour for a Mini Cooper.

Not me. I live 13 miles from work and refuse to bike that far, especially in the rain and 100 degree summers we get here in Texas. My children are on the school golf team, and no way they are going to bike with a golf bag AND school back pack to tournaments at golf courses 10 or 20 miles away. The school does NOT provide transportation; I give them a ride in the car.

Get rid of my Jaguar for some crappy bike? You have got to be joking. If you could afford a worthwhile car maybe you wouldn't be bitching about some global warming. You'll be dead by the time it gets really bad, so why dont you enjoy your life. Who cares about polar ice caps? Do you live on them?

if every man, woman and child in America (all 300 million of us) were to drive a Ford Expedition 150,000 miles a year, it will equal the global warming carcinogens put out by China in a half a year. So, walk if you want to, even if we all do, it's not going to change a darn thing. Global warming is a natural occurrence. The earth has been colder than it is now and it's been warmer than it is now. We are no warmer today than we were 40 years ago.
