As in legally? Probably not. But as taking it as a language in schools, I think is a very nice thing.
But we don't have a very good 2nd language programs in public schools in America... I wish we had better ones.
But it is a very well spoken language. As well as Chinese. They are the two fastest expanding languages in the world.

As long as lanuages are spoken properly (which most Spanish in the United States is NOT at the present time), I have no objection to any language being a second language of this country.
English, however, is the glue which holds us together, like it or not. It is the language of commerce and trade, the language which is used for technical applications worldwide and a darn good form of communication for everyone, regardless of where they live.
Retaining one's own language and cultural values is important and I love living in places where there are different types of people and languages spoken. But the focus has to be on learning English as a means to get along, not only in the United States and other primarily English-speaking countries, but on the worldwide scene, too.

It already is!!
If you mean officially, I think there's no need, just like English is unofficially the second language in so many countries all over the world.
Actually if we except Mandarin Chinese spoken by almost 900 million people, Spanish IS the second most spoken language in the world (about 450 - 500 million people speak Spahish as first or second language), right afer English, and in fact Spanish as mother tongue is spoken by MORE people than English (332 mil. against 322 mil. English!!!)
You hear Spanish in America, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, practically everywhere, just like English.
So it's just natural it's the real second language in the U.S.
Take care! & Hasta la vista!!

I already speak Spanish, so that wouldn't be any issue here. It's easier for a speaker of English to learn Spanish than it is for a Spanish speaker to learn English--and the main reason is that English is Germanic. The basic words used in English aren't even similar to the ones in Spanish, rather only the ones in an extended English vocabulary.
Long, we weren't ever really united to begin with, so that's flawed. America's always been a tossed salad rather than a melting pot, especially here in the Northeast.

I wouldn't care if it were or weren't, but seeing as to how the influence of it is growing in this country, it would be in our best interest to make Spanish our second language; this would fuel the opportunity to have more tourists from around the glove visit our country.

I love learning Spanish. There's a bilingual guy at my scrap yard and every time I go in there he speaks to me in Spanish since he found out I knew a little.

I like French a lot better, but obviously Spanish is a more logical choice.
