I think there is a connection between religious persecution and mental instability - look at Hitler.
The most mentally stable people I know are those who respect the religious viewpoints of others, and those who seek to improve understanding.
The most mentally unstable people I've ever had the misfortune of meeting are those who believe their own way is the only way, and anyone "different" must be insulted, attacked, and feared.

Heehee. Thats like asking if there is any connection between Christianity and sinning. There is a connection in that you have targeted one of the main things they feel that they are the fix for.
But I will say as far as a comparison that the scientologists I have met have struck me as being more stable than the christians I have met have struck me as being non-sinners.
(important note when comparing this post to other posts. Note that I said I have actually met some) :)
