She sbviously feels really bad. The doctors need to start and IV, but she's very scared of needles (even more so, since she's in so much pain...). Anytime somebody caomes into the room and says something about it, she almost gets panicky and just holds onto me and cries. How can I calm her down enough to let them do it?

Just hold her hand and try to distract her. If she has an MP3 player bring that for her to listen to and bring her a new stuffed animal. It will give her something else to focus on.

you need to ask the nurses or doctor if they can give her something that will calm her down, like a lortab or something first that will allow them to start the iv without anxiety. but on the other hand... she must not be in that much pain if she doesn't want an iv. i understand the needle thing... i hate them, just seeing them makes me light headed and nauseated but if i were in pain i would want relief and if an iv were the way to do that i would do it.
they should have oral pain medication as well that she could take, tho it will take longer to start working.

Hold her hand and tell the doctors not to say anything, let her not know. If she does, hold her and let her cry. Tell her it needs to be done and just comfort her through it.

All you can do is be there for her and comfort her. There is nothing you can say to make her feel better. Just let her know how much you care about her and be there when she needs you.
