It's easy to make that assumption if you believe there only IS a SINGLE God. It is "obvious" to those that make that assumption that if you do not worship THEIR God then you do not believe in ANY "real" God instead of just not believing that THEIR God is the same as OURS.
As someone who believes in MANY Gods, I try to explain this concept whenever possible.....
Just because I do not WORSHIP your God, does not mean that I do not acknowledge that he is real to you.....

A lot of people just like to think they know what they're talking about... I mean it's more impressive if you say something about a belief system as opposed to asking what they believe.

They have an excusivist and evangelistic religion. It doesn't accept other possibilities as being valid and tells its followers that they alone have salvation and must spread the sole truth of their God to others. So they deny the validity of other paths.

because its much easier to label people as "going to hell" or "not going to hell" than it is to learn all the intricacies of other faiths (or lack of one). And most monotheistic religions are basically my way or the highway type affairs.

theism is the belief in one God. Judaism, Christianity, Islam.
Polytheism is the beief in many gods : mormonism, roman mythology etc. atheism is against the belief in any god.

I don't...I know there are many religions out there to draw men away from the one true God. But in the eyes of God, they are all the same. They are unbelievers and as such, they will not have eternal life. You either serve the God of this World and his false religions or you serve the God of Heaven and Earth. That is your true choice.

Because they're under the misconception that their concept of the Divine is the ONLY one, so therefore if you don't believe in THEIR god then you don't believe in ANY god.
A rather narrow-minded point of view, in my opinion.
