look on hotels.com and they have customer reviews. my husband and i stayed there a few years ago (before the hurricaine) and stayed about 10 blocks from the french quarter. the MOST important thing is to have someplace that offers parking because parking is very limited inside of new orleans.
also as far as customer reviews go, people from northern states tend to be much more picky about the rooms they stay in, the reviews from people who live in southern states seem to be more realistic and along the lines of what i expect in a hotel.
good luck!!!! have fun!

What is 'expensive' to you?
Iberville Suites is on the back side of the Ritz, and it is only around $100. It's very nice, with marble bathrooms, everything seemed very new. We're staying there again this winter because we loved it.

I always recommend Maison DuBois bed and breakfast. Not the cheapest that you might find but affordable. Great pool, nice large suites and great french quarter location.
