I really don't enjoy doing anything. I feel like my life has no purpose and I'm destined to fail. I'm very lonely and don't have any personal relationships to anyone except my parents. I'll often burst into tears for no very good reason. However, sometimes I can be happy when I'm around dogs, or watching a funny show, or watching the sunset. I've been like this for over 2 years. Am I depressed or just generally unhappy, and how can I tell the difference?

I don't think there is any difference between being depressed and being "unhappy for a long time."

I have had depression for most of my life but that doesn't always mean I can't temporarily feel good about something sometimes--it depends on the how severe the depression is.

You might want to talk to a doctor about this; it worked for me.

I agree with majnun99 that there really no difference between depressed and unhappy for a really long time. Actually, the fact that's it's been going on a long time is pretty good indication that it is depression, not just a temporary low point.

Everybody goes through bad times. If we lose someone, go through a major life change, etc. feeling sad is a normal reaction. But, for most people, the sadness eventually subsides. If it continues for a long time (and I think 2 years IS a long time), then it becomes clinical depression. And like :) said, it doesn't go away by itself. It actually tends to get worse if left untreated.

Depression is very treatable, though, so I hope you will see a doctor. You shouldn't have to live with the pain when there is help available.

Best of luck!

I have struggled with depression for a long time. It does not fix itself. I am sorry your going through it. I don't really agree with medications but it may help for some. I know lots of people it has helped. but maybe you should get an evaluation from your doctor to see if thats what it is. and if he prescribes medication go ahead and try it. It took me a couple times to find one that agreed with my body. i do not recommend Zoloft is has so many bad side effects. But if you want to try to help yourself without it try writing down your feelings in a blog or notebook it really does help release anger, stress, etc. cook, read a book, go out and look at nature, wear bright colors find something that YOU enjoy find what works for you. but do not let it go unnoticed at least go talk to your doctor. I wish you the best heres a ((hug))

PS also exercising does help with depression it releases endorfans in your body to help with depression.
