Take a look at the Sunpak 383. It has a guide number of 120 like the Vivitar 283/285, but it also swivels as well as tilts. The Vivitar and Sunpak are reliable and powerful professional level flashes that will work fine on a Canon AE-1..

I would look on ebay to buy the same model flash you were using before. Or just buy a new Canon flash, all of them made today should work on the AE-1.

You could look on ebay or at keh.com or bhphotovideo.com and see if they have a Canon flash for your camera. If not, the Vivitar 283 should work fine. Be sure you get the off-camera flash sensor. If you don't have an off-camera bracket look for one that Vivitar sold for the 283.

I have a Canon 188A flash that I used on my AE1-Program. Haven't used it in years since I went digital but it still works fine. In mint condition, stored with batteries removed. Make me an offer.
