In 1887 Charles H. Spurgeon (A Baptist preacher in England), printed a series of articles denouncing liberal theology in his magazine, "The Sword and the Trowel." The articles declared that the "new theology" had put the Church on the "Down Grade." They became the spark that ignited the fire storm that swept through the Baptist Church.
In a nutshell, The Down Grade Controversy was over evangelical, congregational Christians abandoning their traditional teachings of base everything on the Bible. Instead, they become open to new ideas and were open to more speculation.
