The beautiful churches are among the few places where poor people are welcome to appreciate the beauty.
Why don't those who call for other groups to close down all their shrines and places for the housing of the poor put their money where their whines are and do the same with their properties?
The Catholic Church throughout the world is probably the leading private provider of housing, medical care and education for the poor.
In all the towns i have lived in the local catholic parishes or dioceses have funded affordable housing -often to the ungrateful
Is ugliness next to puritan godliness or hedonist godlessness or both?
I know many Catholic nuns and clergy who have devoted their lives to helping the poor. i know more catholics who do this than people of any other group.
I find the attacks on Catholic charity to be apparently hypocritical
I agree that all clergy ,Catholic ,Protestant,Jewish,Muslim,Orthodox,Hindu,
etc, should live simple lives and sell all their secular art to help the poor

We Catholics consider churches to be houses of God. We make them as beautiful as possible because we believe that Jesus is physically present there in the form of the Eucharist. In the past, when most people were poor, they still contributed their money and time to build beautiful buildings to glorify God.
Now people glorify themselves by buying ridiculously huge homes for themselves. (They call this progress!)
Most of us also give money to charity.
There's a Gospel account of Jesus rebuking an apostle when he complained about expensive oil being used to annoint Jesus when it could've gone to charity. The glory of God comes first.
Your question also implies that Catholics and/or the Church is wealthy. Not true. In fact, the Vatican usually runs a deficit, and most local parishes just manage to get by.
The Church may own a lot of art in Italy, but those churches are open to the public and function as museums for a lot of non-Catholics. Also, a lot of the art would be bought by rich people and the public wouldn't be able to see them anymore. The U.S. government could sell off the Smithsonian and the National Gallery and build affordable housing. I would vote against it.
May God bless you.

Because beautiful homes still only continue to do what that church does now, try and make the outside of things look okay. I pray with all my heart catholics come to know Christ as Savior before it's too late. All the money and beautiful homes in the world would still not be enough to buy them Heaven

As the pope was reported to have said to god "you keep them humble and I`ll keep them poor"
Andrei.. perhaps you would care to research the oragin of the so called eucharist. It is in fact the Wheat wafer originaly used in a golden ray monstrance in the worship of the godess Isis.

God deserves the very best.
Besides, even if all the cathedrals and churches were turned into"affordable" housing, it wouldn't come close to solving the problem.
Jesus promised there would always be the poor among us. It is not our job to end poverty.
