Nothing else than stress. It is a lot! Do not underestimate the negative influence of stress in your life and how much people are missing because of that. Here, a stress means a physical anomaly in the body. When the mind relaxes, the body restores itself, pretty much like when you sleep but at a deeper and different level. Scientific research have shown that, for some meditations, a lot is going on in the brain chemistry, global coherence is created, etc. Not all meditations are equivalent, so your question is not very precise, but what I am saying applies to transcendental meditation. In mediation you temporarily avoid the environmental influence, but this is not the real benefit. The real benefit is to remove the physical anomalies in the body.

Meditation helps to open the mind to enlightenment. Or stress relief for our at risk for stroke/heart attack friends. It can be quite an exercise to empty the mind and get into the moment. You should read up on it. I never understood it that much until I did. People used to tell me things like: It's like being high in the spiritual sense, It will help you focus your Karma. Of course, they never studied it either. Once I did though, I found it rewarding.
