Airman First Class
Most enlisted personnel never become Officers, because the do not wish to! By the time one reaches Senior NCO rank it is not uncomon to have a masters degree in some field associated to your chosen profession. Getting the degree depends on individual resolve and time management. The USAF provides tuition assistance for enlisted members to ease the financial burden and has branch campus's on most bases for ease of access.
Enlisted paygrades:
E-1
E-2
E-3
E-4 (all Airmen)
E-5
E-6 all Sgts
E-7
E-8
E-9 all SNCO's
It is a professional service and there is no desire amongst most enlisted personnel to jump to the Officer ranks and many fail when doing so or are poor Officers(micro-managers) I always preferred AF Academy Grads, then ROTC, and lastly Boostrap Enlisted.

Airman First Class
It depends on first his/her desire to become an officer in the military, then on how many college credits he/she already has in pursuit of a bachelor's degree followed by if he/she has a desire to pursue the job that is opened to him/her at the time of his/her commission.
It is not automatic being enlisted to becoming a commissioned officer, even with earning an advanced degree. Age, skill level, test scores, physical fitness and a plethora of other criteria must be met. It is not in the least impossible, but with downsizing in the military, it is not easy.

The average enlisted member gets out after one enlistment. The superior enlisted member is career enlisted and reaches the senior NCO ranks. The truly exceptional enlisted member goes to school in his spare time and enters a commissioning program, usually with four to six years of service already completed.

A1C; as I remember it was "Airman 1st Class" You won't normally progress to Officer, from the enlisted ranks unless you have a college degree, and have been accepted to O.C.S. You must also have qualified on your entry exam. scores.....
