Are soldiers viewed the same as those who fought in recent wars such as the Gulf War, Vietnam and the Korean War...or even further back during WWII?

Are military men/women still held high in regard to past wars? Does America still appreciate their efforts or have they received stigmatization in recent times?

its not being a soldier thats the problem, i think its the publics percerption and how it affects the soldier. back then you had people who understood freedom demands vigilance, now you have people like the pelosi reid regime who will hamstring the soldiers if they can gain a political favor. yes we had liberals then but they, in my opinoni werent as nutty or power drunk as today.

1957 to 2007?

in 1957 the public was not too aware of the US Military until Sputnik.

I think today the Coasts who by and large disparage military service are holding their tongues due to the sentiment of the flyover section. There is an extreme element in politics and the populace that hate everything associated with the Military and always have.

Witness the damning statements against the Administration and the War on Terror that are always followed by "But I support the Troops"

Somehow they think this makes things alright. Personally I could never live in Iowa again after seeing how they crave the spotlight of the Democratic Party in their Caucus's. Make me glad to live in South Dakota where we vote people like the Democratic candidates out of office for not representing us in Congress (Tom Daschle)

What will they do when Al Quaida attacks the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines and kills 200 people? Just as Tom Clancy wrote the crashing a 747 into the capital he has also predicted the Mall attacks.

I can only relate with my personal experience. I grew up in a military family during the Vietnam War, I remember there were times my father was applauded and places where he wouldn't wear his uniform off base. When I joined the Army in 75 people said I was stupid, crazy and everything except smart. These are the same people that praise the troops today......I have to admit it pisses me off to see the same people that were burning draft cards and flipping off my father 30 years ago are now singing the praises of war. I guess your opinions change when you are no longer eligible for combat.

I sure know the conservatives do. They are not spitting on soldiers. ( I applauded the soldier who spat on "Hanoi" Jane Fonda). The young men and women in Iraq in OIF need to be applauded also for all their work. I speak to a couple of them and give them as much support as I can. The only ones giving them a hard time are Democrats who don't want to give them funding for their food and shelter.
I most certainly appreciate them fighting for our freedom wherever they are stationed. The public detractors should be ashamed of themselves, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Sean Penn, Sally Fields, Rosie O'Donnell etc., should just SHUT THE HELL UP!

in my opinion the soldiers of years gone by where real soldiers!! not the soldiers of to day!! back then soldiers were soldiers!! blood sweat and guts!! being in the infantry then ment guaranteed death, and even tho those signing up knew that they had no choice as they were poor and no other option! the soldiers of today hide behind their laser guided missiles, and a war fought from a distance!! i stand and salute the men of yester year and their courage in the face of bad conditions and heavy enemy fire!!

Are the mentality's of the worlds civilian population still the same as that from 50 years ago?

No, so how do you expect the military to be the same?

Do you think the way your Father thinks, or Grandfather? No!

I'm going to join the military in the next 3 years so I hold the men and women that fight for our country at the highest of my spectrum. I think it depends on who you ask. I think the soldiers have been appreciated but the way there treated is reflected by what there fighting for.

I view them in higher esteem. We now enjoy an all volunteer military and they have stepped up and have done everything that was asked of them. We should be proud. I was also proud of those who chose to serve rather than run during Vietnam.
