Your first thought may be that when you 'delete' the file, the data is gone. Not quite, when you delete a file, the operating system does not really remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference of the file from the file system table. The file remains on the disk until another file is created over it, and even after that, it might be possible to recover data by studying the magnetic fields on the disk platter surface. Before the file is overwritten, anyone can easily retrieve it with a disk maintenance or an undelete utility.
There are several problems in secure file removal, mostly caused by the use of write cache, construction of the hard disk and the use of data encoding. So erase them using softwares made for that purpose. There are so many erasers freely available in the internet like the following:
Eraser
East-Tec Eraser 5.6,
Shredder 2.5.3,
InternetSpurenVernicter 7.0.2,
DataVernichter 7.3.0.4,
BCWipe 3.0.5,
Shredder 5.0 &
File Shredder 5.5. Use any of them. I found the sw 'BCWipe 3.0.5' very useful and easy to use.

No, if you erased them or overwrote them, but if you are concerned, go to the internet and download a file or picture just a little bit smaller than your card or an even fraction (like 1/4 of the card) and copy it (or several under different names to fill the card) to the card. Now you can erase them or leave them as they have overwritten all the older stuff and thats all that can be found.

They can still see the data if you just delete it.
The way to make sure that they will not see anything is to delete data, then write some data which is not personal but fills the cards memory, than delete this data too and reformat. It is the way to make sure that he/she will not be able to see anything.

It is possible to recover photos from sd memory card, even after photos are deleted, or memory card was formatted. This is because that computer system will only mark the space of deleted files as free, and never wipe the actual data of lost files. However, system deleted file table which records files entry points. So it is not easy to read deleted photos, however, with recovery software like asoftech photo recovery, it is easy to get back deleted formatted images from sd card.

Why would they want to? Reformat it in the camera and shoot junk shots a couple of cycles and reformat a few times. If the NSA or CIA want to recover it at that point, you've got bigger problems.

I'm pretty sure they can't, as long as you delete them from the SD card before selling it.

They probably won't be able to if you carefully look through all of things in it.
