I think tolerance can be considered a character trait. Would you consider yourself to be tolerant regardless of the beliefs of the person in front of you?

Answers without conditions would be great.

Of course, Janet. I was asking specifically if the people answering the question were following the Golden Rule.

No, I follow the ethic of reciprocity. That's what it was called before Christians hijacked it and tried to claim it as their own idea.

As best I can, I follow the Golden Rule unconditionally. However, the difficulty that's never examined in the golden rule (and is just assumed) is that you can actually put yourself in the other person's shoes.

For example, when I'm being honest with myself, I can sincerely say that I have absolutely no idea what it's like to be homeless and addicted to drugs. I can pretend or project or guess, but I don't *really* know. What would I want done to me? A handout? Mandatory rehabilitation? Just to be left alone?

I really don't know. So when I see a homeless person addicted to drugs, and I think to myself "I want to treat them the way I would want to be treated if I was them," it doesn't get me very far past simple respect for their humanity. Empathy is harder than it seems.

You can be a great person that follows The Golden Rule no matter what your religious beliefs are.

Sorry: Yes - to your original question. Sometimes it is extremely hard, but I try to.

I do my best to follow the Golden Rule. I don't mind hearing others beliefs. I may not agree with them. But I feel we can all learn from one another.

Yes, the golden rule, in various forms, predates religion by millenia.

It has been hijacked over and over, the most recent being the rewording by Gerald Gardner for his Wicca book.

But I will never stand still or remain silent if someone in front of me is not.

I try very hard to be tolerant. I have to remind myself of this constantly. It is too easy to jump on any one group and let hate start to fester. If history has taught us anything, never mind the Bible, we can't afford intolerance!

Yes, I do. I try to respect others. I never preach or tell anyone that his or her beliefs are stupid, illogical, etc.

It is hard for me to tolerate those who hate others because of their religious beliefs.

Of course. I would expect people to be just as tolerant with my beliefs. (or non-belief)

No, absolutely not. Sometimes the person in front of you is evil. I don't tolerate Nazis very well, for instance.
