I posted a question about my neighbor having fleas and they are getting into our Apartment. I am curious if Fleas can get onto my Parrot, a black headed caique, and if so can they be as harmful to my bird as they can be to my cat and us? How do I prevent them from harming my bird? I am afraid to use foggers (I would take my bird outside if used) but I am afraid of after when it is "safe" to come back in if the lingering fog could harm my bird. Also what if we had someone come and spray if that would be harmful. I have never had this problem before. We take care of our pets, but now because of someone's negligence I am worried. Please any advice? Thanks!

I wouldn't use a spray or bomb of any kind around your bird. I read where a woman accidently killer her bird with Oust. If you live in an apt. building, I would complain to management, about the people who are infested with fleas. If mgt. is going to spray, make sure they tell you ahead of time, so that you can board your bird out, until safe to bring it back home.

I don't think they get fleas. Well at least mine didn't. My Mom and I we rase cockatails for a whie we had like 20 maybe more at one time or another and no a single one had fleas or mites for that matter. I'm not saying we had a clean place. We had them on our lani and before we knew it we had rats coming into our lani and eating what ever the birds had dropped. Then we had to sell some of them cause we are planning on moving soon. So all will go except for 2 pairs and my bird. Aside from the rat problem we haven't had anything else. We have tried everything possible to get rid of the rats but they keep on comming back. We have 2 dogs a korgy and a rot and both of them love to go and kill some of the rats.

First off fleas can get onto your clothing just by walking outside and be brought back into your home. It is not negligence if your neighbors home has fleas, fleas are a part of life. Before I obtained ANY of my animals and this house was brand new I found a flea in the carpet they live in sand and so forth. However YES it can get on your bird if you have it sprayed naturally take the animal and its food from the home as well as perchs toys and so forth then come in and let the place air for atleast an hr prior to bring the animals back in. Wipe down surfaces you know the bird will be on and remember to take its "cover" if you use one (the cloth you might use to cover it at night)

you don't bring anything back into the house after bombing. you have to go in and open the windows and let it air out of at least an hour. before bringing any animals back in to the house you should wipe down any perches, dishes, cages, bedding that your animals will likely lick or eat out of.
