software required for line balancing in manufacturing?

please suggest a cheap/shareware/free software to analyse the manufacturing process, and do line balancing.

Whenever I've done it in the past, I've just used a spreadsheet, like Excel, and manipulated loads "by hand" to obtain a balance.

For larger plants with many individual loads (>100) I would even consider writing my own VBA code (macros), but everything I had done in the past has been pretty simple (few loads).
