Although all U.S. based horse slaughterhouses have been shut down, thousands of American horses are still shipped across our borders into Mexico and Canada where they are inhumanely butchered and sold for human consumption abroad. But it is not enough—we must ensure that horse slaughter is prohibited in every state in America. Now America's horses are being beaten and dragged across the border into Mexico and Canada so that they can be inhumanely slaughtered for food. I will continue to fight in Congress to end this brutal practice and ensure that American horses will no longer be savagely slaughtered for human consumption."

I admire your stand and agree with your position but I must ask what solution do you purpose? Cattle ranchers in the west are rounding up and selling these horses because they compete for grazing lands, millions of American pet owners have no problem feeding cheap horse-meat to their pets and there are no federal funds or programs in place to care for unwanted horses. Even the wild horses the U.S. government rounds up from national grasslands wind up in foreign slaughterhouses.

You should post this in the Horse section but quite frankly, we are all talked out on this subject.
I should ask though, if all horse slaughter is banned, what do you think happens to them all? There is a drought which has resulted in hay shortages and high prices. Rescues cannot cope with the horses they have now. People are trying to hang onto their homes and do not have the disposable income to take on a horse. WHERE DO YOU THINK THEY GO? I've worked in the horse industry all my life and as unpleasant as it may seem to you, sometimes dead is better than a life of neglect and malnutrition. Instead of sitting here whining about it, have you volunteered at your local rescue, perhaps shelled out a couple of hundred dollars and bought them a ton of hay for the winter? I strongly suspect not. As for me, I've donated over $2000 this year to horse rescues. You need to get the facts about the critical problem in this country due to horse overpopulation. Slaughter is a neccessary evil. It should be done within this country where it can be monitored. You are obviously someone that has no involvement within the horse industry and cannot see the bigger picture. As you slap yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for your efforts, you might want to consider what has happened to all those horses that would have previously been slaughtered here, they are either on their way to Mexico or preparing for a hard winter with no hay -good job!!!!
