There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

"God has not given us a spirit of fear" so fear is not from God. fear is an imperfection ..If you love everyone with the God kind of love, you will have no fear of anything.. Because God gave us a spirit of love and of power and of a sound mind....

See,fear is torment, its not a pleasant thing, its from Satan the tormentor, just like unforgiven, doubt, deceitfulness all such are from Satan if you have any of these in you its because you don't have perfect love in you, simply put ,you're not perfect yet, none of us are, but God expects us to be perfect, just like Jesus, So we can be perfect, but it takes a lot of praying and a lot of studying the word to get there..So don't give up..We can walk in perfect love...we can be perfect...God would not ask or expect us to be perfect if it were not possible for us to be perfect..Let's walk in perfect love....Come on lets go.. ready...WALK...

First, there is the book of John and then right before the book of Revelations is the book of 1 John. It is in that book you are referring to as chapter and verse 4:18.

I would like to suggest that when you are reading the Bible to not take a verse out of context. Read what comes before and what comes after. Consider who is speaking and to whom. Sometimes you need to consider the time period involved and beliefs of that time.

In this case he is talking about God's love for us, not our love for another person, if that is what you are wondering.

In this instance the Holy Spirit is telling us that Jesus has revealed his father as "Love". When his love is matured in us, fear of judgment is allayed.

Verse 19 and 20 tells us that "Love" originates in God. Failure to love is visible evidence of a breach with the unseen God, and a violation of his commandment.

I would also suggest you should be careful when you review a pithy remark from someone who does not believe in God. This person certainly has a right to his own beliefs, which is called "Free Will". But I do not believe your question was whether you believed in God or not. Clearly you do!

Love shares itself. Fear is absence of Love or denial of It. Love "IS" Perfection and to be in fear means you have chosen against Love. Fear has no Power over Love, only over the one who has chosen fear. Punishment is mistaken belief that Love has been altered and this must be "sin" and punishable. Love cannot even know fear so Love has never been changed, only altered in our limited human conceptual mind. God "IS" Love! Love and Peace in mind to you!

(Prov 9:10) "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."

Fear as a motivating factor is valid, even though it is not the highest motivation. We should not have laws against murder, but they are necessary. Those that are made perfect in love are not motivated against wrong actions by fear of the negative personal consequences, but are only moved to do what is right, by love for God and thus love for the objects of His love. And they love what God loves, and hate what God hates.

(Jude 1:20-24) "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, {21} Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. {22} And of some have compassion, making a difference: {23} And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. {24} Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,"

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

The perfecting of our love assures us of the love of God for us.

Fear in this verse is different from the reverence of God, it is being afraid of his wrath, dreading it, but when our love has been perfected then dread is cast out of us. We have peace and contentment in our minds.

It is a process.

Face your fears what ever they may be, Jesus Christ will stand beside you. If it is fear of death or what ever it may be.
