Cranberry has a protein called Hippuric acid which is a monobasic acid that both prevents batceria from sticking to the walls of the bladder and urinary tract and cause bacteria that already ARE adhering to it to slough off or fall off and become excreted in the urine. This can cause a burning sensation upon urination because of the Toxic effects fo the metabolic byproducts of the bacteria irritating the urinary tract lining. Cranberry juice and its cousin Blueberry juice ALSO acidify the mucousal lining of the bladder and urinary tract which weakens the bacteria and makes them less likely to continue to be able to cause further damage to the lining of the excretory system.
