Well, you've narrowed it down to Honolulu, so that limits you a little. The other recommdations here are all good, but we live here and prefer to get away from Waikiki as much as possible. We've been disappointed with service and prices, along with parking, down there lately.

That said, here's what our family and friends do before they come to visit. We built a personal web page with the best links and things to do in Hawaii, including dining out, rated and reviewed. (We've lived here a total of almost 6 years, so we've been to most places at least once.) That way they could look BEFORE they got here and see what they want to do. Our 1 to 4-star ratings may be a good place to start for those "don't miss" things.

We just ate again last night at the Ichiriki Nabe restaurant, on Piikoi, behind the Ala Moana Center. Absolutely wonderful! Have a review on it on our page as well.

We also love the Restaurant Kunio, out in Waikele. It's near the Waikele Outlet Center, so while it's not Honolulu you might be able to build it into your day's schedule. We live in Ewa Beach, so we prefer not driving all the way into Honolulu for a Japanese dinner, but this place is consistently great. See the reviews on this one too.

There's a section on dining guides on our site. Some big ones like Fodors and Frommers, but several more useful local guides...always good to know where the locals prefer to eat, especially with Japanese food.

The page is at http://home.hawaii.rr.com/gonebananas. Could go into a longer answer here, but with all the work we put into that page, well, you'll see...it will answer your question.

I know there is a Japanese restaurant in Waikiki in the Pacific Beach Hotel. There are three restaurants there. One is a buffet style (breakfast) called the Oceanarium, then there is a seafood restaurant, then there is the Japanese restaurant.
