Going in the spring go when the Cherry trees are in bloom. Kind of hard to predict but it is very nice. Lincoln Memorial has the Vietnam Wall next to it and the Korean War Memorial very close by. The Capitol, arrange a tour with your congressman and avoid the big lines. Across the street from the capitol is the Library of Congress Jefferson building which is impressive inside, usually short lines to get in. The Smithsonian museums are also very impressive. A fairly good way to see a lot is to go to Arlington Cemetery and buy the tour mobile package. It will bring you to the major attractions and save you a lot of walking. I have a travel blog posted here to look over some pictures to give you an idea of what DC has to offer. Three things is unecessarily restrictive - but if you have, for example only one day, this would be my choice.
1. Tour the Capitol Building - both to see something of the US Government and to see an interesting building. The tour is fairly quick (less than an hour) and interesting.
2. Visit a Smithsonian museum. Pick one of the 16 or so in DC which best reflects your interests. Spend an afternoon there.
3. Visit the Monuments, from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial via the World War II memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and Korean War Memorial. If you're not dead tired at this point - head on around the Tidal Basin to the FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.

Why stop at 3?? They have Metro tour buses that circle the city to all the major sights. My top 3 would likely be the Lincoln Memorial (go in the evening - the view of the reflecting pool is amazing), where you can also see the Vietnam and Korean War memorials. Arlington Cemetery is also a must-see. Lastly, the center of the mall has the Washington Monument and WWII memorials, with the White House a short walk away. Do yourself a favor and go to the zoo also, and the Smithsonian Air & Space and Natural History museums. All these things are free.
I was there in June, and stayed at the Washington Suites Alexandria. HUGE suites at a reasonable price with free shuttle to the Metro station, a large pool, restaurant, kitchen - great!

I hope you have time to see more than three! Washington has so many. The Smithsonian alone could take days. There are, I believe eleven Museums. The White House. The Jefferson, Lincoln, and Washington monuments. Arlington by all means. The Capitol building and so many others. I only had one day and have always wanted to go back and stay a couple of weeks at least.

I think most people on here have it just right particularly if you have a very short time.
1. National Mall- you get Lincoln, Washington, and WW2 memorial in one shot. Also it is close to Korean memorial.
2. A couple of the Smithsonians, Art then Natural History are my favorites.
3. If you can afford it, rent the Lincoln Bedroom for an evening from whichever party is currently in power. If not, I thought the Holocaust museum was very powerful or the FDR memorial because he was president for so long.

National Mall-on one end is Capitol Hill. On the other is the Washington Monument. In between is a large fountain and an expanse of grass
DC Zoo-they have the cute pandas
Smithsonian Museums-even if you're not into science these museums are cool.

Go to Arlington, It will change your life, Go to the wall(which will be close to other things, like Korean war memorial,Lincoln etc.) and then go to the Redskins game. Actually, some loved the holocaust museum. But I'm not into them. Have fun
