I give an an opinion -- A belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof (http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/opinion) -- someone feel sthe need to give a thumbs down to a statement that is respectful of the asker, and the community. Have people become so think skinned that an opposing position is a threat?

In the words of a very good friend, "Opinions are like @ssholes. Everyone's got one."

I agree people seem to be mislead that an opinion is just that and not agreeing with it is also an option- but it doesn't make your response wrong-
its agreeing to disagree thats all-

To finish your closing phrase, "and they all stink". I think people thumbs up opinions they agree with and thumbs down opinions they don't agree with out of spite. I've seen so many who thumbs down some good honest answers, and I believe it's spite that motivates. I will not do that when I finally get to rate answers. I will rate honestly, even if I don't agree.

A thumbs down is nothing to be annoyed about.
I respect your opinion, but I don't agree with you or I don't like what you had to say, that is when a thumbs down comes into action.
I see nothing offensive in that, grow a thicker skin is my advice to you.

When I use the thumbs down its my way of saying I don't agree with your opinion. I get them all the time and it doesn't really bother me. Only one has but meh, that was a bad day.

Crying about a thumbs down is petty.

Apparently not because I often receive thumbs down for stating my opinion but then I feel targeted by the neo nazi atheist extremists who cannot stand that a person might be so "stupid" as to believe in God. Give me all the thumbs down you want. Jesus said to count is as joy when men persecute us for His name's sake. Thank you, I appreciate the overwhelming sense of joy this gives me. Everytime you do this, you make my place in heaven lots better.

See, what did I tell you?

If you put out opinions, why wouldn't you expect them back good or bad?

Your question is chasing its own tail.
