No. A gift in gratitude for a recommendation or a grade or any reference that would serve to better your station in life is absolutely inappropriate. In some situations, it is even illegal as it can be construed as bribery. In fact, many corporations do not allow such gifts or at the very least, put extremely strict limitations as to the value of the gift.
Much better would be a sincere, handwritten letter thanking them for the time and effort put forward in your behalf. If you are accepted, follow the first letter by another letter letting them know of the success you've had and thanking them for their help.
People will more appreciate a genuine thank you and an acknowledgement of the part they played in your successes than a box of chocolates, anyway.

Absolutely, sounds like a very nice and thoughtful thing to do. I'm sure they will appreciate it and think even higher of you if you need a recommendation in the future.

How could a nicely written thank you and an inexpensive yet nice gift not be OK.

Of course it is OK, and you will be remembered for having class and maturity too.
