Is there a reason why people say to not eat the unopened clams after the dish is cooked? Thank you!

If the clams don't open, that means they were dead before they were cooked. And, if they were dead before they were cooked, they have had time to decay- which could lead to food poisoning. That is why clams, crabs, lobsters must be alive prior to cooking :) The only exception to the rule is if you froze the shellfish while they were alive, you could cook them. Shellfish decay very quickly, so be careful.

If the clams did not open during cooking, it means that they were dead before you cooked them. These clams are diseased and will make you sick if you eat them.

Clams eat "for lack of a better word-crap" If they don't open, there were dead prior to cooking them. This means that both the clam and the crap it has been eating have been fermenting all types of germs. These germs can make you very, very sick!

That's because they are dead. They could poison you.
Check the clams before you cook them ( if you're cooking yourself ) you want to be sure that they are tightly closed. If they''re open and do not respond to your touch they are dead.

Because they're dead, and you don't know how long they've been dead. And clams go bad really fast, which is why you buy them live.
