You're in luck, I lived through it. I was thrown out of a raft while whitewater rafting and got stuck in a hydraulic for about three minutes undewater. The event was videotaped and I went under and then emerged three minutes later. It's kind of like getting stuck in a washing machine.
At first, I realized I was in trouble and tried to remain calm and figure a way out of the danger. Then my breath was about to burst and I started to panick. Then my body just exhaled and inhaled a big gulp of water and I didn't choke but was full of water. When I realized it was the end, I became very calm and wondered what my friends and family would say. Then, I was thrown up to the surface and just floated there in my life jacket. The sun was very bright but there were these dark spots that began clouding my vision and I still couldn't breath. I was drowning even though I was on the surface. My friends in the raft were calling out to me to swim to the raft but I couldn't move my body. Even though they were screaming from about 15 feet away I could barely hear them. I was pulled onto the boat and layed on the rib of the raft was across my stomach and a lot of water gushed out of me and I started choking and coughing it all up, and lived.
I hope that helped, the only thing I felt was calm, numbness and exhaustion. My thoughts were of those I love. Your friend's last minutes were probably something like that.

I spoke to a gentleman who was drowning. Someone rescued him probably about a second before he was dead. When they brought him back to this world he was angry!! He said, "Why didn't you let me go?!! It was so wonderful
and peaceful."
That should make you feel better. But, I must say that he was NOT committing suicide, which is a sin. (no matter what your religion is-even if you're an atheist.)
I have heard many stories from people who have almost died, and they all say the some thing. That it was a beautiful thing. None of these people were trying to kill themselves.
That's the best I can do!! I hope your friend was so drunk, he just thought he could fly, or jump and then just swim to land. If so, I'm sure he had a beautiful experience. Let's go with that. :)

Yes...I can't swim but I wakeboard all the time...even with a life jacket on I fall pretty hard into the water. You get water in your ears, nose and mouth...That is what you will feel...when you can't breath anymore the water will fill you up killing you slowly....and don't forget that you are struggling to come up for air...that is suffering....
If your friend was drunk he may have not felt it...You are numb when your drunk...don't know what you are doing and nothing made since...your blood alcohol would have to be really high though...do you know what his was?
Sorry about your lost....I lost my father in a car accident...

As soon as it is too late to ask your friend if downing is a painful way to go nobody will be 100% sure either way but let's just say I hope not.

At the beggining it's supposed to be terrifying.
Then when your body has no more air you kinda slip into unconciousness. So their last couple of minutes were probably more like being in a deep sleep than anything else

It was probably more scary then painfull, shoot may have had a heart attack before drowning, that would be painfull,or they may have been knocked unconciouse and didn't feel a thing.
