Well what cut of meat did you buy? I am a meatcutter and a cook so I can answer your question with the right description. You say a smaller joint?? Is is round bone, shoulder, rump?
In general, reducing the time of cooking any roast, can mean your meat will not be tender. I answered your post before. And a pot roast can be done in the oven and on top of the stove. I do both, but prefer using the oven. Cook it for half the time then do a fork test for tenderness. Cut off a bite and test it as well.

I usually cook pot roast at gentle heat for about 2 1/2 hours. Don't know where you live, but in Aberdeen area, I would buy a piece of 'Plate' or 'Brisket'
Brisket also lovely boiled. Use to make a big pot of Broth.

OK, I am confused. I would cook it until it was done. Just keep checking on it and when it cooked to your desire. Serve to eat.
