Before you ask your boss to take off that day, you should first find someone who can work Fridays 5-10. After you find someone who can takeover your shift, then ask your boss if you can take Friday off while ______ takes your Friday 5-10 shift. Good luck.
Ask in person. If you are on the phone, it is easier for your boss to say no. But in person people are less likely to say no.

A written note asking for the day off .
( You did not say if this was 1 time or permanent )
That way he will have something in writing to remind him when making up the schedule .
Make sure you indicate whether this is a 1 time or permanent request .

There's only one way; ask him. Tell him why you need the time off and offer to make the time up.

Go talk to him, and do it as soon as possible. He might or might not go along with what you want - if he doesn't, you should show up for the shift.
