All an international driving license does is to translate your valid license into several languages to make it easier for the local persons to understand your status. It is not a stand alone document, but is carried with your valid license. If you are a tourist, and have a valid license in India, you will be allowed to drive here. Enjoy your vacation.

International License might get it for a while. India license will not. You will have to pass a drivers exam and ride along with a police man to get your new New Jersey drivers license. Keep in mind you have to also have car insurance. The rules are even different across the Hudson River In New York. So locate your local Department Of Motor Vehicles, Study the handbook take the test. Welcome to America!

I think it doesn't work at all in America, you could drive around and if you get caught, they prob will let you off with a warning or advise you to go get your license, etc
