Why do you need to substitute a component part of the human soul or psyche?
Your question is dealt with in detail by Thomas Molnar in his book God and the Knowledge of Reality on pages 3 to 14 where he describes the history of what he calls the God problem.
All the philosophies from which our current world view is derived were essentially theological ones - Molnar cites
the debate as being entered into by
Xenopanes in ancient Greece
by the Sophists
by Yajnavalkya and the Hindu metaphysicians in India
western medieval philosophers debating the limits of faith and reason who declared discursive knowledge was disqualified to investigate matters of religious belief including belie in God, miracles, prophecy, grace, etc.
The same issues were debated in the 18th century - later by by Vico Condorcet Comte Hagel and others.
Your question is profound and cannot be seriously answered here other than to say the only thing which can replace religion is another name for the same spirituality and attributes to which religious affection and attachments are given.
Molnar shows how the removal of religion from life is impossible without rewriting history and eliminating those qualities within man which make us human (and distinguish us from animals (my comment))

Jesus sought to replace religion with a relationship. True christianity is not a religion but a relationship with God.

Freethought. It's a philosophy. Look it up for more info.
It's about figuring out things on your own, in your own time, without a dumb book, with nobody giving you an ad nauseum lecture every day or once a week, with no bending or bowing or genuflecting or washing every five minutes, unless you WANT to. lol
YOU decide if you want to be a good person. YOU decide if you want to be moral and ethical or devious, duplicitous and ruthless. YOU decide what happens when you die and YOU decide whether to let yourself feel guilty about ANYTHING.
Check it out!

Nothing. And, When did "Religion" become a bad word?
I'm baffled at how the word "religion" is almost always used in a derogatory way lately. When did that happen? It reminds me of how, a long time ago, the word "gay" used to mean "happy". (It still does in a dictionary.) But now if you tell someone, "gee, you sure are gay today", they might think you're calling them a homosexual.
Words have been getting twisted up a lot in modern culture. No wonder people don't communicate very well.
The Merriam-Webster defines "religion" as:
- : the service and worship of God or the supernatural: commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
- : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
Sounds okay to me. Any worshippers of ANY religion have a problem with that definition? I believe that people who say "religion" in a negative way are the "do-your-own-thing" type of people. They "personalize" God, and forget that we are a human family, and like all families, we have our traditions: They forget that families have special days, special little things they do AS a family, and so does the family of God.
I love my Catholic faith, I love my Catholic religion, and I love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Twist the word up all you want: The only loser in that situation is you.

"Atheists believe in life, they believe in science and art and poetry and love and marriage and family -- they believe in all those things. They just don't believe in supernatural magic."-Richard Dawkins.
All of those things can replace supernatural magic.

NOTHING will replace my love for God and my belief that Jesus died for me.
You replace your religion with anything you want.
Leave me in peace.
