Some people are just genetically predisposed to depression or other mental illness. Also, some people just are very sensitive or have unreasonably high expectations and when things don't go as they think they should, it is very hard on them. It has nothing to do with being selfish and ungrateful. It's just the way they are. Those who are truly clinically depressed cannot help it, it can only be controlled with medication and/or therapy. They cannot be held responsible for their depression any more than someone can be responsible for having high blood pressure or arthritis. It's just the way they are.

To a degree, yes it can be controlled. I think you just answered your own question though. Those who are unsympathetic are unable to understand emotion. They don't feel therefore they are not capable of sympathy. There is a level of mental illness in that as much as there is in depression. Depression is illness when it goes beyond being a sadness one can control. It has nothing to do with being grateful enough of what one has. If that was all it took to be happy again the pharmacy industry would crash. People who cannot recognize the very real suffering of this sick world enough to have sympathy for those who have trouble swimming through the suffering are just moving through this life with blinders on. Those who are more prone to depression are those who experience life with far more contact with the sickness of this world.

You must distinguish between the differing forms of depression. There is forms of depression which are genetically based, IE inherited.

However there is a genetic tendency towards even reactive depression.

Having said all that, it is true that we learn to be depressed as a way of coping with some situation. Most people will suffer from depression at sometime in their lives.

All your moralizing about depression will not help you understand anything about depression. And indeed block recovery.

Nothing could be farther from the truth- often, people who suffer from depression are the best of people. Abraham Lincoln suffered from depression.

I assure you, depression is an illness that is past forever beyond one's locus of control. It has to do with chemical imbalances in the brain, life circumstances, traumatic events, bereavement, bad "luck" or unfortunate circumstances, genetic predispositions in the bloodline for depression, and other things as well.

Yes, some people are less than sympathetic with those of us (including myself) who have depression- but that is not our fault. They very obviously have never had to endure the terrible burden of depression! If they had, they would be more caring and empathic.

No- we cannot control our depression. But be that as it may, we can do things to improve or ameliorate the depression. For one thing, therapy is important. So are medications. And, my relationship with Jesus Christ has also helped tremendously with combating my depression.

There are certain elements that are within our control- one of which is our choice to do something about the depression. A victim mentality is not a good one. We have to admit the truth to ourselves. Even the strongest of us have our moments of fatigue. Getting help is not a sign of weakness. If anything, it is a sign of strength.

It depends. If someone is diagnosed by a psychiatrist that they are clinically depressed, then they can take bouts of it all there life.
Other people have low self esteem, or just feel sorry for themselves.
But real depression can not be controlled and you are not being bad if you genuinely suffer from it.

There is no one single cause so two different people might be depressed for comp[letely different reasons. e.g. One person might be depressed bcause of a chemical imbalance in the brain, another because they are negative thinker, another because they have experienced a bereavement ,yet another because of an unconscious regression to a childhood event when they felt lost or abandoned etcetc. Selfishness in itself is not a symptom of depression though it might contribute to it when someone who is inherently selfish feels unloved because they cannot get their own way.

Could be hereditary, could be life circumstances, could be the person's general personality that makes them prone to depressive moods. I don't think anyone deserves depression any more than I think a person deserves a terminal illness. Most of us prefer health & happiness to illness and depression.
